New to vaping? This guide covers everything you need to get started safely and confidently in the UK — what vaping is, the types of devices available, how to choose your first kit, and the safety basics every beginner should know.
What Is Vaping?
Vaping means inhaling vapour produced by an electronic device (an e-cigarette or “vape”) that heats a liquid called e-liquid. E-liquid usually contains propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG), flavourings and optionally nicotine. Unlike cigarettes there is no tobacco and no combustion, which is why UK health authorities describe vaping as significantly less harmful than smoking — although it is not risk-free, and it is intended for adult smokers, not non-smokers.
Types of Vaping Devices
- Prefilled pod kits — the simplest option. Click in a prefilled pod and vape. Ideal for beginners switching from disposables after the UK disposable ban.
- Refillable pod kits — compact, affordable and flexible. You fill the pod with your own e-liquid, which works out cheaper long-term. Great first kits.
- Pen-style vapes — slim, discreet devices, usually mouth-to-lung. Easy to use and maintain.
- Box mods and sub-ohm kits — larger, more powerful devices for direct-to-lung vaping. Better suited to experienced vapers.

Choosing Your First Kit
- Match your smoking habits. Heavier smokers usually do best with a mouth-to-lung pod kit and higher-strength nic salt e-liquid (up to the UK legal limit of 20mg/ml).
- Keep it simple. Your first device should have minimal buttons and no complicated settings. See our Best Vapes 2026 roundup for beginner-friendly picks.
- Budget for e-liquid. Refillable kits cost less to run than prefilled pods. Our Buying Guides break down the real running costs.
- Buy from reputable UK retailers. Look for proper age verification and genuine UK-stock products — never buy from social media sellers.
Vaping Safety Basics
- Only buy devices and e-liquids from reputable UK sellers — counterfeits are common and can be dangerous.
- Use the charger supplied with your device, and never leave charging batteries unattended.
- Store e-liquid and devices out of reach of children and pets. Nicotine is toxic if swallowed.
- UK law limits e-liquid nicotine to 20mg/ml and tanks to 2ml — be wary of any product that exceeds these limits. See our UK vaping laws page for the full rules.
- Vaping is for adult smokers. If you do not smoke, do not start vaping.
